Suarez: Uruguay can still win the Cup
Posted on | Tuesday, July 12, 2011 | No Comments
Luis Suarez, Uruguay requires a further goal to win the America's Cup, despite the elimination in front of watching the first Tuesday of the conflict with Mexico.Uruguay had high expectations heading into the event after the World Cup last year when they reached the semi-finals in South Africa but went to Peru and Chile have left them in need of victory La Plata to progress in Group C.
They strike without a partner Suarez, Edinson Cavani, after having twisted his knee ligaments during the 1-1 draw with Chile, but the defender Martin Caceres has been suspended from the register a second time in the tournament.
"Obviously, replacing a quality player Edinson is not easy," admitted Suárez.
"We all know what he brings to the group, but that's why there are 23 of us in the team and next to replace what they are doing an excellent job."
Even a draw might be enough to Uruguay, the two best teams in third through the quarterfinals, but Suarez is to aim higher than the minimum.
"We have our destiny in our hands," he said. "We just have to think ahead in Mexico.
"Our goal is to win the Cup."
Chances of Mexico are even slimmer - but not completely off - after two defeats in their matches so far.
The guests were beaten 2-1 by Chile in Peru, before something jumped to a surprise weekend in the 1-0 victory.
Forward Giovani Dos Santos admits they have everything to do.
"It is difficult, we now know it will be very complicated, but we will keep trying as long as there is a chance," he said.
The campaign in Mexico, after his wins the Gold Cup this summer, has been beset by problems with eight players suspended for disciplinary reasons before the tournament.
One of them was banned and his brother Jonathan Giovani Dos Santos said: "The story would have been different if Mexico had gone to play the Copa America with the team that played the Gold Cup
"We have a group of players competing for the first time in the competition of this magnitude.
"I am sad, everyone is shocked to have suffered two straight to win the competition."
