Gerrard: Competition does not interfere with Lucas

Steven Gerrard is to support the Lucas Leiva to be held to increase competition in Liverpool.

The Brazilian midfielder, currently away on Copa America duty, has only recently gained a fan base of Anfield skeptical.

Marks a failure initially £ 5,000,000, Lucas had to work hard in an effort to become a regular first team and an integral part of the Liverpool set-up.

He finally made the breakthrough last season with 47 appearances in all competitions, marking him as a key man for the Reds.

24 years can not afford to rest on our laurels, though, as Kenny Dalglish is busy adding to his midfield ranks this summer.

Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson was prepared, which means that the battle for starting berths will be difficult this season.

Club captain Gerrard is guaranteed a place if you want, but he believes that Lucas is a strength of mind, taking a recurring role in the side.

"He has a strong positive outlook," said Gerrard.

"I saw all the difficulties he has experienced. It 's basically a roll up your sleeves, work hard and improve.

"He is stronger in the gym and never leave your head down.

"I was willing to fight to prove many people wrong and was always one of our best players last season."
